The original of this piece was done in bronze with a marble base by Pierre-August Renoir in 1908 and is housed in the Philadelphia Museum of Art. This is an AUTHENTIC COPYRIGHTED REPRODUCTION of Renoir's original that was done by Alva Museum Replicas, Inc. My understanding is that Alva Museum Replicas/Alva Studios did copyrighted museum replicas from the 1940's through the 1970's.
Their works are considered to be some of the finest reproductions in the industry due to their ability to closely duplicate the colors and textures of the original. Alva Studios is no longer in business and their pieces have become quite collectible as a result.
The statue depicts Renoir's son and is entitled "Head of Coco" as Coco was his nickname for his son. The head and shoulders are made from Alvastone, a trademarked high density casting material of Alva Studios, which was able to capture all the details and shadows of the original piece. The light reflecting off the head makes it look like bronze is underneath which is not the case.
The bust is mounted on a square base that appears to be wood. There are a few small marks on the corners of the base. These could be touched up if desired. On the back of the base of the head, there is a Maker's Mark which says "Alva Studios, 1958" which I assume is the year that the reproduction casting was first made. This is your opportunity to own a beautiful reproduction of Renoir's work.Feel Free to Ask Any Questions. This item is in the category "Art\Art Sculptures".
