Ming Dynasty 16th Century Large Carved Stone Buddha Priest Bust/Head. Extremely rare and valuable Chinese cultural relic/artifact - a large limestone carving of a Buddhist priest wearing a close-fitting cap folded forwards and gathered above the forehead, now in a substantial carved wood shoulder section acting as the stand. Very fine early Chinese stone carving of substantial size depicting a Buddhist temple priest.
Once belonged to a larger installation and was carved during the 16th century (Ming Dynasty) or earlier. The head rests on an early 19th century base carved in the form of a shoulder section from hongmu wood. The head weighs over 26 lbs and the carved shoulders weigh approximately 11 lbs. The head has a chipped area on the hat as pictured. The shoulders show signs of age and have been fitted with a small wedge along the bottom front to allow for an even presentation.The head measures 11.75" tall x 8" wide x 6.5 deep. The shoulder section measures approximately 5.75" tall x 13.5" wide x 7 deep. The entire installation is approximately 15 tall.
